History of May 25 – African Liberation Day
African Liberation Day is an annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on the 25th of May 1963, and aims to promote unity and solidarity among African people and states. It also is the anniversary of the launch of Africans Rising on 25th May 2017. In the past, the Africans Rising movement has used May 25-African Liberation Day to recognize issues of illicit financial flows, slavery, and health. Given the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, this mobilization is an important time to call on governments, institutions and businesses to put lives before personal interests and profits during the global health crisis.
May 25 – African Liberation Day 2021
This year, Africans Rising is mobilizing on May 25 – African Liberation Day under the theme “Pan-Africanism in the 21st Century: Our Health, Our Rights, Our Future” and continuing the use of our #Rise4OurLives hashtag on social media.
This is a moment to organize and connect with African activists and movements working to build healthy communities, this includes the physical well-being of all Africans as well as a healthy respect for issues of freedom, democracy and social justice.
This continued work for our May 25 mobilization encompasses both our #Rise4OurLives and #FreeThem campaigns and maintains a global dialogue about the lack of healthcare infrastructure across the continent and health-related human rights challenges during a time of global pandemic. We aim to strengthen a collective foundation of support, innovation, and action for African grassroots activists and organizations.
