The strikes were followed a few weeks later by public protests in the two regions’ main cities, Bamenda and Buea organised by leading civil society organisations in the regions in support of the strikes and against the general “marginalisation and deprivation”
From the 20-25 of August 2016, Africans from across the continent and those in the Diaspora trooped on the East African Country of Tanzania to discuss the Africa Africans want.
The sun was going down on a long and inspiring day as the ten Nigerian participants at the Africans Rising conference gathered under an ancient Jacaranda tree on the grounds of MS-TCDC in Arusha, Tanzania.
The Africans Rising Conference held in Arusha, on the 23rd and 24th August was a critical manifestation of the movement to join forces across the African continent and in the Diaspora, to call for and plot a path towards the Africa we want.
My journey back to Nairobi from Arusha was as eventful as the conference itself, and a great point of learning.
We, the citizens and descendants of Africa, as part of the Africans Rising Movement, are outraged by the centuries of oppression; we condemn the plunder of our natural and mineral resources and the suppression of our fundamental human rights. We are determined to foster an Africa-wide solidarity and unity of purpose of the Peoples of Africa to build the Future we want – a right to peace, social inclusion and shared prosperity.
