We will be launching the pilot edition of Africans Rising’s training program on Digital Security this coming November. The Internet has revolutionized the way people organize around the world to demand accountability, equality, and the respect of their rights. On the African continent, although one can command the positive role internet has played in giving citizens a voice, there is a worrisome effort by governments to infringe on citizens’ freedom of speech and access to information. We have been witnessing increasing governmental surveillance, an absurd enacting of taxes of social media users, wide internet shut-downs, and the arbitrary detention of activists who boldly voice out their opinions online. It is now a tremendous duty for all of us to learn about how to protect our digital rights as they continue to be violated all across the continent.
With the Activism in the Digital Era Program, Africans Rising aims to support African activists by strengthening their digital resilience and equipping them with technical tools and resources to safeguard their digital space. In this one-week curriculum, activists will obtain intensive training on digital security and will meet with some of the most tactical activists from across the continent. The program will provide a space for co-learning and collaboration on how to effectively use the Internet to advance human rights, democracy and accountability. The selected participants will be trained on Digital Security, Digital Literacy, Threat Models & Countermeasures, and Online anonymity. They will also be provided with the necessary resources to be safe and secured online as they continue their activism work.
The training will be conducted in two modules: French and English. The French session will commence from November 21 to 24, 2018 and the English Session from November 26 to 29, 2018. The training will be held in Arusha, Tanzania and participants will be lodged at the MS Training Centre for Development Cooperation (MS-TCDC).
