Africa Rises: Redefining Justice Through Reparations
In a though provoking virtual gathering on April 15, 2025, Africans from across the continent and diaspora came together for an insightful Information Session hosted by Africans Rising. The theme “Africa Rises: Redefining Justice Through Reparations” sparked a crucial conversation about the continent’s history, ongoing struggles, and the urgent need for collective action.
A Necessary Path to Restoration
Anne Osamba, Africans Rising Campaigns and Advocacy Lead, set the tone for the discussion, emphasizing that Africans Rising’s Reparations Campaign is not just about historical reckoning but a necessary path to restore African dignity and sovereignty. Eunice Adhiambo Odhiambo, a volunteer supporting the Reparations Campaign, delivered a compelling presentation that took attendees on a journey through African history, highlighting the continent’s pre-invasion sovereignty, sophisticated governance systems, and thriving trade networks.
The Enduring Wounds of Slavery and Colonization
The presentation also shed light on the horrors of colonization and the lasting impact of slavery and the slave trade. Odhiambo pointed out the global double standards that have seen other communities receive compensation for historical injustices while Africa continues to receive empty apologies. “Reparations are not just about money; they are about restoration, healing, and structural change,” she emphasized.
A Call to Action
The Information Session explored the role of African governments and the African Union, urging policy action, continental unity, and investment in community-led solutions. Attendees shared their experiences and strategies, highlighting the importance of collaboration. The gathering concluded with a unified message: “Africa will not wait any longer. Reparations are not a favour; they are a right. And the time for Reparative Justice is now.”
